(This article contains some spoilers for “Avengers: Endgame.”)The most common problem with really long movies is a midsection that lulls – it’s unavoidable with many stories, and it’s a thing that can make a three-hour film make it feel like it’s four hours long instead. But “Avengers: Endgame” does not have that problem. Its midsection is just as fast and zippy as the rest of it, and it somehow manages to make a three-hour running time feel like it’s only two.And that’s because this film’s midsection contains the part of the film where the Avengers enact their big plan to undo the damage Thanos did at the end of “Avengers: Infinity War.” That plan? A “time heist,” in which the Avengers go back in time and steal the Infinity Stones before Thanos destroyed them. Our heroes revisit major past events, like the immediate aftermath of the Battle of New York from the original “Avengers” film, where they need to snag the Tesseract and Loki’s scepter before they can be taken back to SHIELD. But things don’t go as planned and the whole situation gets extremely out of control, and they make one very big mistake that should theoretically have major consequences. Also Read: ‘Avengers: Endgame’ – Everything You Need to Know About the Asgardians of the GalaxyThat flub comes when Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), disguised as security, gets the Tesseract knocked out of his hand right as he’s trying to escape. It lands at the feet of Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who is at that time Thor’s prisoner just moments after the end of the battle, and Loki grabs it and uses it to teleport away. The movie kinda treats this development as a minor hiccup – Tony and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) simply go further back in time to steal the Tesseract in 1970 instead, and that whole Loki situation is never mentioned again. But this is a problem, according to the rules of time travel set by the film. Unless Steve somehow prevents that whole thing from happening when he returns the stones, then the incident would have sparked a branching alternate timeline where Loki is running around with the Tesseract after the Battle of New York. Also Read: ‘Avengers: Endgame’ – That Last Scene Makes No SenseAccording to the “Avengers: Endgame” time travel rules, the only way to keep that from happening would be to literally keep that from happening in the moment – either by preventing the Avengers from doing their time heist in the first place or by interfering in that moment. Going back to 1970 to steal the Tesseract then also doesn’t help because allegedly Steve returned the stone to that moment. And regardless, as Hulk says, changing the past just creates a new, alternate timeline. Doing something to the Tesseract in 1970 would not affect Loki’s ability to snatch it in 2012. According to the rules set by this movie. So unless Captain America went back to 2012 and specifically prevented Loki from taking the Tesseract, then there’s an alternate timeline where Loki just ran loose after the Battle of New York and did who knows what bad things. And there is no indication that Steve did anything about that situation – Hulk tasks him simply with returning the stones, and Old Steve only says he returned the stones before deciding to retire in the past. And he would have returned the Space Stone to 1970, not 2o12.Also Read: ‘Avengers: Endgame’ – We Need to Talk About This Black Widow SituationSo what does this mean for Loki? It’s anyone’s guess, since Loki is never even mentioned again after that scene. It could be, and this is purely speculation, that Loki’s escape is the beginning of the Loki TV show that Marvel is producing for Disney+. That show will see Loki popping up to influence various historical events on Earth, and the Tesseract could potentially enable time travel by some means. And also let’s not forget that the Avengers just have a time machine now. Time travel just exists now.But really you know as much as I do about where Loki went and what he did after, because “Avengers: Endgame” is not really concerned with that situation. So maybe we’ll find out something someday in a movie or a Disney+ show, or maybe that incident will never be mentioned again and it will forever, to us, just be a silly gag that will have potentially major ramifications for the inhabitants of that alternate timeline.Read original story ‘Avengers: Endgame’ – What Happened With Loki and the Tesseract?

    Mare – Wikipedia

A mare is an adult or other .

In most cases, a mare is a female horse over the age of three, and a is a female horse three and younger. In , a mare is defined as a female more than four years old. The word can also be used for other female animals, particularly and , but a female is usually called a « jenny ». A broodmare is a mare used for breeding. A horse’s female parent is known as its dam.

An uncastrated adult male horse is called a and a male is a . Occasionally, the term « horse » is used to designate only a male horse.

    Reproductive cycle[]

A nursing foal. Domesticated mares may nurse their foals an average of four to six months, occasionally longer, depending on human management decisions and the temperament of a given mare.

Mares carry their young (called ) for approximately 11 months from conception to birth. (Average range 320–370 days.) Usually just one young is born; twins are rare. When a mare foals, she nurses the foal for at least four to six months before it is , though may allow a foal to nurse for up to a year.

The , also known as « season » or « heat » of a mare occurs roughly every 19–22 days and occurs from early spring into autumn. As the days shorten, most mares enter an anestrus period during the winter and thus do not cycle in this period. The reproductive cycle in a mare is controlled by the (length of the day), the cycle first triggered when the days begin to lengthen. As the days shorten, the mare returns to the anestrus period when she is not sexually receptive. Anestrus prevents the mare from conceiving in the winter months, as that would result in her foaling during the harshest part of the year, a time when it would be most difficult for the foal to survive.

However, for most competitive purposes, foals are given an official « birthday » of January 1 (August 1 in the ), and many breeders want foals to be born as early in the year as possible. Therefore, many breeding farms begin to put mares « under lights » in late winter in order to bring them out of anestrus early and allow conception to occur in February or March. One exception to this general rule is the field of , which requires horses to be 60 true calendar months old (5 years) before competing at longer distances.

Fillies are by age two and are sometimes bred at that age, but generally should not be bred until they themselves have stopped growing, usually by age four or five.

A healthy, well-managed mare can produce a foal every year into her twenties, though not all breeders will breed a mare every year. In addition, many mares are kept for riding and so are not bred annually, as a mare in late or nursing a foal is not able to perform at as athletic a standard as one who is neither pregnant nor . In addition, some mares become from their foals, even temporarily, and thus are difficult to manage under saddle until their foals are .

    Behavior[]

A broodmare. Note slight distension of belly, indicating either early pregnancy or recent foaling.

Mares are considered easier to handle than . However, have little to no hormone-driven behavior patterns at all, thus sometimes they are preferred to both mares and stallions. Mares have a notorious, if generally undeserved, reputation for being « marish, » meaning that they can be cranky or unwilling when they come into .[]

While a few mares may be somewhat more distractible or irritable when in heat, they are far less easily distracted than a stallion at any time. Solid training usually minimizes hormonal behavior. For competitive purposes, mares are sometimes placed on , such as the drug Regumate, to help control hormonally based behavior. Some riders also use various , most of which have not been extensively tested for effectiveness.

In relation to maternal behaviour, the formation of the bond between a mare and her foal « occurs during the first few hours post-partum, but that of the foal to the mare takes place over a period of days ».

Mares and geldings can be pastured together. However, mares may be a bit more territorial than geldings, even though they are far less territorial than stallions. Sex-segregating herds may make for less infighting, especially if kept in close quarters. However, studies also have shown that when a « lead mare » or « boss mare » is in charge of a herd, all remaining animals rest for longer periods and seem more at ease than do those in herds led by a gelding.

In wild herds, a « boss mare » or « lead mare » leads the band to grazing, to water, and away from danger. She eats and drinks first, decides when the herd will move and to where. The herd stallion usually brings up the rear and acts as a defender of the herd against predators and other stallions.

Mares are used in every and usually compete equally with stallions and geldings in most events, though some competitions may offer classes open only to one sex of horse or another, particularly in classes. In , mares and fillies have their own races and only a small percentage compete against male horses. However, a few fillies and mares have won classic horse races against colts, including the , the , the , the and the .

Mares are used as animals in some cultures, especially by the and formerly nomadic peoples of . Fermented , known as , is the national drink of . Some mares, usually of breeding, are kept in North America for the production of their urine. Pregnant mares’ urine is the source of the in the hormonal drug (derived from Pregnant mares’ urine).

    Historic use[]

Until the invention of and even later where there was less cultural acceptance of the practice, mares were less difficult to manage than stallions and thus preferred for most ordinary work. Historically, the nomads of the preferred mares on their raids, because stallions would nicker to the opposing camps’ horses, whereas mares would be quiet. However, other cultures preferred male horses over mares either due to a desire for more aggressive behavior in a fighting animal, or to not be inconvenienced with a loss of work ability due to a mare’s pregnancy, and .

    Etymology[]

The word mare, meaning « female horse », took several forms before A.D. 900. In the form was mere or mȳre, the for mearh (horse). The form of the word was Mähre. Similarly, in and , the word was marc, in , march, in Cornish « margh », and in marc’h. The word is « said to be of Gaulish origin. » The word has no known beyond and . One possible derived term is a mare’s nest, an expression for « excitement over something which does not exist » The term , is not directly connected etymologically with the word for female horse, but rather to that meant « incubus » or « goblin. »

    Coliques au Mini Cheval

Colic is one of the main causes of death in horses, and miniature horses are especially vulnerable
due to the small size of their intestines, allowing a blockage to form. This is a painful condition
caused by a disruption of the horse’s digestive system. It can occur from such causes as, internal
parasites, large- or small-colon impaction, or spoiled food.

The term “colic” refers to abdominal pain in the horse.  It does not indicate the cause of the pain.
Colic can be due to gastrointestinal, urinary or reproductive problems.

GI (gastrointestinal) issues are the most common cause of colic.  Furthermore, the 2 common
causes of GI pain in the horse is either gas or impaction.

The best preventative is to keep the miniature horse on a laxative diet, and grass is the most
desirable food for this reason. Avoid coarse hay or forage.

Intestinal parasites is one of the most common causes of colic in horses and can be prevented by
regular worming. Keeping manure cleaned out of the pens and mowing pastures will reduce worm
    populations.

The miniature horse can be dewormed every 8 weeks, or he can be given a daily dose of dewormer
in his food. The safest products are pyrantel, bendamidazole, and ivermectin. Ivermectin should be
administered after the first frost in the fall and again in the spring to combat bots.

One of the causes can be enteroliths, which are stones that form around a foreign object
swallowed by the horse. Wood, metal, plastic or glass can cause this if ingested by the miniature
horse. Foals that chew their mother’s mane or tails also can develop this condition.

Surgery is the only treatment if a miniature horse is diagnosed with colic caused by enteroliths.
Prevention of enteroliths is through avoidance of bran and alfalfa hay which are high in minerals
that cause these stones to form.

Gas is also a common cause of colic in horses.  Most times, the cause of gas is not found but known
reasons for gas in horses are: rapid change in diet- including sudden change to an either very rich or
poor quality of hay, and parasitic infection.  With colic caused by gas, horses have brief, self
limited symptoms such as: the horse looking at it’s side, pawing, pacing, shaking, stretching
repeatedly, playing with their water but not seeming to drink much, and even appearing mildly
    bloated.

If gas is the cause, then these symptoms should improved by encouraging hydration and walking the
horse for up to an hour. However, if after an hour this does not seem to relieve the symptoms or if
the horse begins to lie down, roll,  appear depressed or stop eating, seek veterinary care
immediately as this could signal a potentially life threatening cause, such as impaction.

Impaction is a blockage in the intestine.  Causes of this can include coarse dry feed material that
the horse has consumed without adequate water intake; poor chewing while eating due to dental
problems; and even decreased GI motility from decreased physical activity or advanced age.
Worm or sand impaction can even be a cause of blockage.  So if your horse’s colic symptoms do not
resolve in about an hour, or any warning symptoms occur, it is better to seek immediate veterinary
    attention.

    Colic in Horses

Ask most horse owners, and their number one fear for their horses is colic.  To reduce colic we must first understand all the contributing factors that have a role in causing colic. The shame of it is that there are many factors that cause colic and they are mostly due to man’s mismanagement of horses.

Horses evolved in Asia and the Middle East in an arid environment. They were designed to be foragers as they are a hindgut herbivore. Due to their evolution in this environment, horses were forced to forage large areas (up to 20 miles per day) in order to get enough to eat. Horses have a small stomach only representing 7% of their digestive tract. Therefore they need to graze almost continuously. They selectively graze those plants that are the most nutritious. On occasion they would eat grass seeds but never in great quantity. As man domesticated the species, confinement was implemented and the horse’s whole way of life changed. Parasites also became a problem because of confinement to small areas. Horses are fed at man’s convenience which led to a change from a continuous forager to a meal eater, whereby the majority of the dietary energy is derived from grains. Most of the time, colic is due to feeding mismanagement resulting from a poor understanding of the horse’s digestive tract.

An increased risk of colic is associated with certain factors:

Texas A&M University Animal Science Department in conjunction with the Texas A&M Veterinary College did a very meaningful research project that illustrated the risk factors that were associated with colic (Cohen, Gibbs, Woods. JAVMA, 1997).

    • Relationship to farm size showed an increase in colic as farm size decreased.
    • Being stalled more than 50% of the time and a recent change in housing was associated with an increased risk of colic.
    • Horses that were outside drinking had less risk than horses that were stalled watering from a bucket.
    • Primary use of the horse (breeding, racing etc.) was not associated with colic, however a change in activity was.
    • There was no relationship of feeding a vitamin, mineral, protein or fat supplement with colic.

A change in the type of hay may cause colic for many reasons. Hay of poor quality is often less digestible, predisposing to impaction. Changing types of hay as in alfalfa and bermuda, may be related to colonic pH changes resulting from calcium differences in the two hays. In another study, a change to lush pasture was associated with colic. The association of colic with a change in hay may have been skewed as Texas had a severe drought that year which may have caused a change to poorer hay quality any time a change was enacted.

An increased incidence of colic was associated with changes in activity levels. These levels were also associated with changes in housing and this may have had an additive effect.
The observation of horses that received anthelmintics on a regular basis shows that there is a decreased risk of colic due to the benefits of a preventive deworming program. There may be an increased risk of larval cyathostomiasis (small strongyles) where deworming occurred within the previous 2 weeks prior to examination. Deworming kills the adult small strongyles and causes an increase in larval activity following this event.

    Colic Risk Factors:

    • Recent change in diet
    • Recent change in type of hay
    • History of previous episodes of colic
    • Horses stabled as opposed to pasture
    • Recent change in housing
    • Failure to deworm regularly
    • History of recent deworming

    Colic Prevention Program

    1. Practice Good Parasite Control: A series of fecal exams to detect the presence of worms would give a baseline assessment of the parasite level in the herd. Based on these results, a deworming schedule should be set up accordingly. Choose an anthelmintic that is broad in spectrum and safe for the class of horses and the level of infection present. Being overly aggressive in the choice of “purge deworming” products can have disastrous results, and consulting with your veterinarian about his/her recommendations about the types of products available is wise.
    2. Regular Dental Care: A horse’s teeth grow 1/8 inch per year and need to be floated annually. Grinding of grain contributes to reduced particle size and allows for salivation, with amylase aiding in the digestive process. Hay needs to be chewed thoroughly in order to aid the prevention of impaction. Horses with dental pain often shortcut chewing and therefore miss many of the benefits of their ration, because of this there is an increase in the incidence of choking that occurs in horses with dental pain.
    3. Grain or Concentrate: Feed a grain or concentrate that minimizes starch content (low nonstructural carbohydrate –a starch measurement in feed) and includes other energy sources such as fat and digestible fiber.

      1. Always feed grains/concentrates at least twice a day and never feed more than 0.5% of body weight at any one feeding.
      2. Processed feeds (pelleting, steam flaked etc.) increase starch gelatinization, thereby increasing pre-cecal digestion. The increase in pre-cecal digestion reduces the risk of starch spilling into the cecum and colon, therefore lowering the risk of colic.
      3. Starch that is not digested pre-cecally enters the cecum where it can cause gas production, lactic acidosis, loss of the bacterial flora, endotoxin production, colic and laminitis.
      4. Other factors that contribute to colic are: the source of starch, the amount of grain processing, the amount of feed being fed, the type/level of fiber in the diet, the timing of the feeding and the individual needs of the horse. These facts emphasize the importance of proper feed management.
    4. Timing of Feeding: Again remember that horses are continuous eaters so meals should be evenly spaced and if a meal is late, never feed more to make up for it. It is better to feed a little more hay and even reduce the amount of concentrate for that meal. Go back to normal feeding the next time.
    5. Hay/pasture: Horses experience colic less while on pasture. It allows them to graze continually and also provides exercise. Pastures are the best way to feed a horse; it also reduces feed and labor costs.

      1. Keep in mind that horses grazing on pasture can be problematic because of the variations in the weather throughout the year. For this reason hay should also be available when grass gets short.
      2. Practice some form of a pasture rotation system, mowing pastures frequently is a good way to keep it vegetative. The nutrient content is higher and the digestibility is increased when the pasture is immature.
      3. Lush high moisture pasture can cause colic, particularly when horses are first turned in. For this reason a slow introduction and a gradual increase in the time that they are allowed on pasture is critical.
      4. It is also a good idea to feed hay to the horses before they are allowed on pasture.
      5. As a general rule, hay should always be fed at a minimum of 1% of body weight when horses are kept in confinement.
    6. Individual Feeding: Feeding horses individually in stalls, pens or by tying the horse up is an ideal situation. This way they can be fed according to body weight and condition without fear of competition. Competition can cause a horse to bolt its feed (rapid ingestion and swallowing), allowing a dominant horse to overeat. Competition also increases the risk of injury.
    7. Dietary Changes: Remember that we are feeding the “bugs” rather than the horse. In the colon and cecum, millions of bacteria and protozoa reside where they digest fiber for the benefit of the horse. It takes time for this microbial flora to adapt to a dietary change. Gradually increase the new feed mixed in with the old feed over a 7-10 day period.
    8. Water: Fresh clean water is imperative. Decreased water consumption will contribute to impaction in the colon and cecum. Water consumption is based on palatability, temperature and availability. High solids, high mineral content and contamination are reasons that can lower intake. Many times at the start of winter, water intake drops because horses are not used to cold water. Impaction colics start about the second day after water intake decreases. In addition to this problem, horses will also lower their water consumption in the face of poor water quality which may be caused by some forms of algae that are toxic.
    9. Moldy Feed/Hay/Toxic Plants: Moldy feedstuffs should be avoided. Horses will not eat moldy hay if they have a choice. Sometimes baled hay will include toxic weeds and plants; therefore you should feed hay that is weed free. Careful inspection of feed and hay is a must.
    10. Foreign Material, Sand, Wood, Bedding etc: Indigestible materials will create problems if ingestion is significant. Sand is a problem when horses spill feed and attempt to eat it off the ground. Sand accumulates in the intestinal tract and will cause colic. This is another reason to tie horses while they are eating and then turning them out to pasture when they are done. Many times a deficiency of roughage will cause horses to eat wood or bedding. Likewise a salt or mineral deficiency will also cause horses to lick and chew on fences, trees etc.
    11. Blister Beetles: These are found in fields of alfalfa and are extremely toxic to horses causing a severe colic. Alfalfa that is beetle free is a must and responsible alfalfa dealers and growers should supply your roughages. Alfalfa that is from a 1st or 2nd cutting is the safest.
    12. Exercise: Feeding should be at least 2 hours prior to or after exercise. Grain feeding should be withheld 8 hours prior to strenuous exercise; hay should be given in small portions in multiple feedings the day of the event. Water should be available free choice.
    13. Weigh Horses and Feed: Horses should be weighed preferably by scale. If a scale is not available, then a weight tape can be used. Feed according to feed manufacturer’s recommendations using a horse’s weight and body condition. Feed by weight and not by volume. The weight of different feeds varies widely according to the density of the feed. A coffee can or scoop is fine but you should know the weight of a volume measurement.
    14. Fast Eaters: Horses that tend to bolt their feed (large bites with minimal chewing) should be fed in large bottom troughs where the feed can spread out. Some people have used smooth stones that can be placed in the trough to slow them down even more. New feeders are on the market with large dimples in the bottom which has the same effect of slowing consumption. It also looks like it will reduce waste because there is less opportunity to take large mouthfuls, which contributes to spilling.
    15. Happy Horses: Minimize stress. Keep horses in small groups; keep the groups the same. Horses are gregarious (they like each other’s company). Once a pecking order is established, anxiety is created by moving them around. Anxiety can cause colic; this is what happens due to a change of housing. Some horses pair up and if they have to be separated, use sedation to minimize anxiety.

After reading all of this one may wonder how horses have survived. Actually, however, if horses can be kept as much as possible in a natural state in a pasture environment and if one can keep in mind all of the above considerations, colic will be an infrequent occurrence.

Coliques chez les chevaux – Astuces de chevaux

Published on Jul 26, 2012/http://www.equinevetireland.com Equine/vet Warren schofield discusses Colic in Horses and helps owners understand this complicated problem.

    New Study out of Finland:

New Study: « …Real-time access to a horse’s digestive system, provided by SIU’s cannulated horses, will help Venable and graduate student researchers identify the profile of bacteria present and how that changes with diet, stress and travel. Ultimately, that could contribute to a better understanding about what a horse really needs to prevent, treat, and recover from a colic episode…. »

Recent Colic of one of our horses:

Recently one of our horses coliced. We had our first freeze the night before. The horses had been out on the grass for only 2 hours. We are careful to monitor their turnout. In fact, they are on the grass regularly, and usually for a longer interval of time (3 1/2 – 4 hours). Mindful of the increase in sugar after a hard freeze their time was reduced. In spite of that, my horse, who has never coliced, did. We gave him 8cc of Banamine at 7:15 AM and walked him. He did have a bowel movement that was normal while we walked him. He also did not go down, roll, kick at his flanks, bite at his flanks, etc. after the Banamine kicked in. (that took about 15 minutes with an intermusculine injection). We called the vet at 9:00 AM, when they open for regular hours and asked that a vet be sent to do a thorough check. The following is what was determined and what was done beyond our Banamine injection:

    Patient History Note:

QAR (Quiet, alert, responsive) as opposed to BAR (bright, alert, responsive), temperature 99.2, Pulse 36, heart auscults wnl (Within Normal Limits), lungs are mildly harsh bilaterally, RR (Respiratory Rate) 20, GI (gastrointestinal) is slightly hypermotile all 4 quadrants. Administered 66 cc Buscopan IV. Rectal: Soft formed manure in rectum and small colon, no gross abnormalities palpable. Did not pass NGT (Nasal gastric tube). Did not sedate.

**Monitor closely. Keep track of manure output, water intake, appetitie, attitude. Call if any further signs of colic, any fever, cough, nasal discharge or any other concerns.

**Limit grass today, and gradually reintroduce grass over the weekend.

A Patchy was fine and showed no further symptoms. We kept him on hay only for several days and turned him out in the sacrifice area so that he could move about freely. Kate and I feel that if the horse is able to move about freely it jumpstarts circulation, gut, etc. It seems that this colic was only a gas bubble. Good thing! One question that I did ask Dr. French was now that A Patchy has coliced is he prone to it? You often hear that in the horse world. The answer was that in this case of gas colic–NO. However, if there is a structural colic, yes. Below you will see that there are 6 different types of colic that I have covered in this article.

    Note Study:

by Horse Health and my research

    What Is Colic?

Colic is not a disease, it is the name given to a symptom – abdominal pain. Colic, or abdominal pain, is a common ailment in horses. More than 70 causes can trigger colic, including gas distention, food impactions, intestinal tract spasms, and intestinal displacement or twists. One of the more exotic forms is colic caused by , or stone like formations that form in a horse’s digestive tract.

There are a number of different types of colic:

Gas (or flatulent) Colic is the more common type. It occurs when there is a collection of gas in the bowel. It causes pain as it moves through the gut by distending the bowel abnormally. It is considered the least serious type of colic, although the violent reactions of the horse may not give that impression.

Obstructive Colic is when a mass of food accumulates in the bowel and prohibits passage through the intestines. This can happen if a horse bolts his food too quickly or is given inadequate water to drink.

Sand Colic is prevalent in sandy areas. It is caused by the accumulation of sand in the gut. Horse owners in such areas should take precautions to help avoid sand colic.

Twisted Gut is where a portion of the intestine becomes twisted. It is extremely serious. Small Intestinal Strangulation Obstruction, Colonic Displacement, or Colonic Torsion are the proper medical terms for this condition.

Enteritis/colitis is another instance of abdominal pain is caused by inflammation of the small (enteritis) or large (colitis) intestines. These are serious medical cases and require immediate veterinary attention.

Gastric distension/rupture is another possible problem. If your horse gorges himself on grain or, even more seriously, a substance which expands when dampened like dried beet pulp, the contents of the stomach can swell. The horse’s small stomach and its inability to vomit can cause the stomach to burst. Once this has happened death is inevitable. If you suspect that your horse may have gorged itself on concentrate feeds, seek veterinary advice immediately.

A picture of the horse’s gastro intestinal system will help in the understanding of why the horse colics. It is a complicated business. Often it is impossible to determine the reason for the pain and colic. Symptomatic treatment, close monitoring and attention to any adverse developments usually lead to resolution of the problem.

    Causes of Colic

There are a variety of things that can cause colic in horses, among them:

    Parasites

Both bloodworms and roundworms can cause colic – bloodworms (strongyles) by damaging the blood vessels supplying the bowel. Roundworms can reach such a high concentration that they block the intestine.

    Sudden Diet Changes

Sudden changes in diet may cause colic. Any new feed should be introduced gradually.

    Insufficient Water

Insufficient water or unclean water. Horses should always have access to fresh, clean water.

    Irregular Feeding

Long intervals between meals may lead to the horse bolting his food down without chewing properly.

    Symptoms of Colic/A Quick List

    • Lying down more than usual
    • Getting up and lying down repeatedly
    • Standing stretched out
    • Standing frequently as if to urinate
    • Turning the head towards the flank
    • Repeatedly curling the upper lip
    • Pawing the ground
    • Kicking at the abdomen
    • Rolling

Symptoms for Specific Types of Colic

In gas colic, the symptoms will be intermittent, with the horse going through quiet spells followed by violent spells. The horse may bite at his flank or roll. Even though gas colic looks violent and the horse is in a great deal of pain, the pulse usually does not rise above 50.

In obstructive colic, the consistent pain may cause the horse to paw at the ground and break into a sweat. The pulse may rise into the 60’s. There will be an absence of abdominal sounds, which makes it easy to a veterinarian to diagnose this type of colic.

An elevated temperature, a pulse ranging into the 80’s, and extreme pain that is non-responsive to medication often indicates vascular compromise of the bowel, requiring surgery.

Any colic should be treated seriously, as the average horse owner will not be able to tell which of the above types of colic their horse has. The amount of apparent pain is not always a good indicator of how serious things are. If your horse shows any signs of abdominal pain, you should call your veterinarian immediately.

    Preventing Colic

While horses seem to be predisposed to colic due to their anatomy and the function of their digestive tracts, management can play a key role in colic prevention. Although not every case is avoidable, the following guidelines from the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) can maximize the horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic:

  • Establish a daily routine – include feeding and exercise schedules – and stick to it.
  • Feed a high-quality diet comprised primarily of roughage.
  • Avoid feeding excessive grain and energy-dense supplements. (At least half the horse’s energy should be supplied through hay or forage. A better guide is that twice as much energy should be supplied from a roughage source than from concentrates.)
  • Divide daily concentrate rations into two or more smaller feedings rather than one large one to avoid overloading the horse’s digestive tract. Hay is best fed free-choice.
  • Set up a regular parasite control program with the help of your equine practitioner.
  • Provide exercise and/or turnout on a daily basis. Change the intensity and duration of an exercise regimen gradually.
  • Provide fresh, clean water at all times. (The only exception is when the horse is excessively hot; then it should be given small sips of lukewarm water until it has recovered.)
  • Avoid putting feed on the ground, especially in sandy soils.
  • Check hay, bedding, pasture, and environment for potentially toxic substances, such as blister beetles, noxious weeds, and other ingestible foreign matter.
  • Reduce stress. Horses experiencing changes in environment or workloads are at high risk for intestinal dysfunction. Pay special attention to horses when transporting them or changing their surroundings, such as at shows.
  • Do not unnecessarily change a horse’s diet regardless of the horse’s environment or use.
  • If changes in forage or concentrate are necessary, be certain to make these changes very slowly, preferably not at the same time as management changes.
  • Do not purchase a horse if you know it has a history of colic.
  • Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic. Age, sex, and breed differences in susceptibility seem to be relatively minor. The type of colic seen appears to relate to geographic or regional differences, probably due to environmental factors such as sandy soil or climatic stress. Importantly, what this tells us is that, with conscientious care and management, we have the potential to reduce and control colic, which is the number one killer of horses. Learn your horse’s vital signs and be observant of anything out of the ordinary so that you can give your veterinarian as much information as possible.

For more information about colic prevention and treatment, ask your equine veterinarian for the « Colic » brochure provided by the American Association of Equine Practitioners in partnership with Educational Partner Bayer Animal Health. 2xVR: erreur du meilleur cheval de Red Dead Redemption2

I see numerous youtube posts and gaming articles on « How to get the BEST horse for FREE » which invariably regurgitates steps of taming a white Arabian in the wild.  But how can there be an objectively best horse when such designation depends on an individual’s play style and the activities engaged in RDR2’s vast open world.  While the primary stats health/stamina/acceleration/speed are important, I personally find the secondary attribute of courage to impact my gameplay much much more.  No amount of health and speed makes up for a horse bucking you directly into the path of  bullgators, a grizzly, pack of wolves, or any other kind of predator that menace the landscape.

Not that’s a horse! Legs of an Ardennes totally look
like a prehistoric quadruped rather than a modern horse.

I spend most of my time fishing in the Bayou and Arabians totally suck around gators, snakes, or any kind of predator.  I spawned a white Arabian through the St. Denis glitch and I gladly sold this high-strung high maintenance beast for a few dollars after much exasperation. An Ardennes while a slow tank will tolerate gator country like a champ!  Race horses spook easily even fully bonded and they will buck you straight into danger.

    Courage Stats

In game courage behavior appears not to be a consistent blanket attribute as listed in the RDR2 compendium but highly dependent on context. Horses as in real life behave differently under different stressful scenarios, i.e. a horse steady in combat can still spook easily around alligators.  Even fully bonded, I’ve seen different horse reactions in these following types of stressful situations:

    • human combat, shootouts
    • wild predators
    • traffic in town like St. Denis- I had an Arabian that was terrible around trolley traffic in St. Denis
    • in deep water crossing

The official game courage levels seem incorrect.  From the descriptions alone, it would appear War Horses have the highest levels of courage, followed by Half War horses like the Turkoman with race horses being the most skittish- however this not the case.   Through experience and in Reddit chat- Arabians are reputedly extremely skittish but the Arabian is listed with the highest level of courage(6/10) while war horses have 5/10 or moderate level of courage.   My husband proudly sticks by his Tennessee Walker(2/10) that he takes hunting everywhere and it does quite fine near alligators. Try to take an Arabian anywhere near gator country.

Just as speed can differ for different coats of each breed, courage may vary as well and perhaps at the individual level. Even if the official courage ranking seems faulty, I listed the breeds by category ordered by the courage rating listed in the compendium. I’ve also added the compendium description in underlined quotes that pertains to courage below:

      • Superior
        •   (6/10 courage listed is highly dubious, just do a google search on « rdr2 arabian skittish »)
      • War
        • Ardennes(5/10 courage) -«  This sturdy, brave breed handles well under pressure and will not become agitated while in combat. Ardennes horses are known for their well-built bodies as well as being brave in combat situations. »  This is the breed Rockstar added as a pre-order bonus.
          • My fully bonded Strawberry Roan Ardennes is a perfectly dependable tank in combat, but he still bucked me when ambushed by a grizzly and a pack of wolves.
        • Andalusian (courage not listed) – listed as the only breed called out for courage in hunting. « This breed of horse is courageous and will not be spooked easily. Andalusian breed of horses are tough and aggressive in nature which makes them perfect for hunting. «
        • Hungarian Halfbred (courage not listed) – « renowned for its fearlessness making them perfect for loud and dangerous situations »
      • War/Race
        • (5/10)- « Turkoman is a multi-class horse with characteristics that make it perfect for racing and combat. »
          • My fully bonded silver turkoman is fantastic for combat but I have been bucked during predator attacks by grizzlies/wolves/bullgators.  Turkomans also do not like being near gators.
      • War/Work
        • (5/10) -« They have traits of both work and war horses, so are strong and will not be easily frightened. This loyal and bold breed of horse are invaluable in combat situations.«
      • Race/Work
        • Missouri Fox Trotter(5/10) – some conflicting reddit threads mentioning how easily it spooks, or alternatively how it’s braver than an Arabian. In truth, anything with 4 legs is less skittish than an Arabian.
      • Draft:
      • Work
      • Race
      • Riding
        •  (2/10) – even with this low courage rating, my husband plays exclusively with Tennessee Walkers and they seem do fine in combat and around gators.
        •  (1/10)
        • (1/10)

Appearance – Size, Coat, Shape, Neck Girth, Gait, etc…

More than 50% of game play is trotting around on your steed. You will be consistently staring at your horses head, rear, haunches, and tail more than any other rendered objects in the game. There’s no shame in choosing a horse for it’s looks in a video game.

Although I had spawned the super rare Tiger Striped Mustang, it just looked too out of place and I traded it away for a Turkoman.

Arthur never looked right on the Arabian- just too « My Little Pony », too bad the stables don’t offer rainbow mane.

    My Own Stables

Currently I rotate between the following 4 horses:

Silver Turkoman – really a magnificent beast- too good for Arthur but this horse does not do well around predators.

Strawberry Roan Ardennes War Horse – handles like a tank but great for something steady around
    the Bayou near alligators.

Reverse Dapple Roan Nokota – One of the fastest in game (7 speed 5 acceleration), it’s actually a lot of fun to ride but spooks easily. Low health and stamina(3/3) were less of an issue.

Nokota Blue Roan – I am partial to his blushing pink nose, and even traded in an Arabian, Tiger Striped Mustang for this low stat Nokota. I want to trade him in for an Adalusian but can’t find the heart to sell him.

When looking to get the rarest horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll first need to know what that horse looks like. As of right now, the rarest horse breed in Red Dead Redemption 2 is the Arabian. The Arabian comes in a few different coat colors, with the rarest being the Legendary White Coat.

To find the rarest horse in Red Dead Redemption 2 (the Legendary White Coat Arabian), you’ll need to travel North near Ambarino, then head West of Lake Isabella. Because of this area’s beautiful snow-covered scenery, it can be hard to spot the horse due to its Legendary White Coat color. To make things easier, we recommend exploring the area slowly, and turning on your Tracker Vision.

Once you’ve found the Legendary White Coat Arabian, you’ll need to catch and tame it. As expected from the rarest horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, this can be quite a challenge. To catch a wild horse, you’ll need to equip your lasso. Then, on horseback or on the ground, carefully approach the horse you’re trying to capture so as to not startle it. If it takes off, you can give chase.

After you’ve caught the horse with your lasso, slowly approach the horse and use either X or Square to calm the horse as you’re approaching. With the horse calmed as much as possible, mount the horse and begin the process of trying to break it. As the horse attempts to buck you off, hold your left analog stick, then turn the stick either left or right in response to the direction the horse is bucking.

For example, if the horse bucks right, turn your analog stick to the left. We also recommend tapping X or Square repeatedly to calm the horse as it’s trying to buck you.

Once you break the horse and it stops bucking, you’ll need to work on taming it. This can be done by riding back to Valentine. At first, the horse won’t be too keen on this idea. To calm the horse while riding, slow down, then tap your left analog stick to pat your horse. Once you arrive at the stables in Valentine, you’ll need to put a saddle on the horse to claim it.

Until you saddle your new Legendary White Coat Arabian, you’ll want to stay mounted on the horse. Once you’ve put a saddle on the horse, you can dismount and then start the bonding process with your new horse. This can be done by focusing the horse, using L2/LT, then choosing the options to pat it, brush it, and feed it.

Unlike other horses in the game, it’s worth reaching the max bond level with the Legendary White Coat Arabian. This is because, in addition to being the rarest horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, it also has the best stats in the game for Health, Speed, Stamina, and Handling. By keeping the above tips in mind, you should now know what the rarest horse is in Red Dead Redemption 2, how to catch it, and how to tame it.

    I knew you were
    Je savais que tu allais
You were gonna come to me
Que tu allais venir vers moi
    And here you are
    Et te voilà
    But you better choose carefully
    ‘Cause I’m capable of anything
    Of anything and everything
De n’importe quoi et de tout

    Make me your Aphrodite
    Fais de moi ton Aphrodite
Make me your one and only
Fais de moi ta seule et unique
Don’t make me your enemy, your enemy, your enemy

So you wanna play with magic
Alors tu veux jouer avec la magie
Boy, you should know whatcha falling for
Baby do you dare to do this
    Bébé oses-tu faire ça
Cause I’m coming atcha like a dark horse
Are you ready for, ready for
    Es-tu prêt pour, prêt pour
    A perfect storm, perfect storm
    Un fort orage, fort orage
Cause once you’re mine, once you’re mine
Car une fois que tu es à moi, une fois que tu es à moi
    There’s no going back

    Mark my words
    Marque mes mots
This love will make you levitate
Cet amour va te faire léviter
    Like a bird
    Comme un oiseau
Like a bird without a cage
    Comme un oiseau sans cage
    But down to earth
    Mais terre à terre
If you choose to walk away, don’t walk away

It’s in the palm of your hand now baby
It’s a yes or no, no maybe
C’est oui ou non, pas peut-être
So just be sure before you give it up to me
Up to me, give it up to me
De m’en mettre une, de m’en mettre une

So you wanna play with magic

Jahrhundert in Verbindung gebracht.

Histoire frisonne

    Friesian History

The Friesian horse is the only horse breed native to the Netherlands where the Friesian has been known since as far back as the 13th century. At the start of the Christian era, the Friesian was used in battle1 and Friesian troops were documented in Britannia. In the 4th century, English writer Anthony Dent1 wrote about the presence of Friesian troops at Carlisle and their horses. Both cases probably involve Friesian mercenaries mounted on Friesian stallions. Anthony Dent and other writers indicate that the Friesian horse is the ancestor of both the British Shire breed and the Fell pony.

Since the 16th century, Friesians have been in Neaples.  Jan van der Straat’s 1568 painting shows « Phryso » owned by Don Juan from Austria.

In the 11th century, Willem de Veroveraar1 used horses that had a remarkable resemblance to the Friesian breed. From this period, there are many illustrations of knights riding Friesian-looking horses.
During the crusades and later, in the course of the Eighty Years’ War, it is very probable that the Friesian breed was crossed with Arabian and Andalusian horses.

The first written evidence of use of the name “Friesian horse” was an announcement in 1544 that German Elector Johann Friedrich von Sachsen came to the Reichstag in Spiers riding a Friesian stallion.3 Three years later, he rode the stallion in the Battle of Muhlberg and was recognised from afar by Emperor Charles V.  Also an etching dating from 1568 of the stallion Phryso1 belonging to Don Juan of Austria in Napels is very well known. During the 17th century, the Friesian horse was well represented at the various riding schools where the haut école of equitation was practised.

Use of the Friesian horse, however, became increasingly limited to the current Dutch province of Friesland over the 18th and 19th centuries. Towards the end of the 19th century, the presence of the Friesian horse in the countryside of Friesland became an expression of the owner’s wealth with the breed used mostly to bring upper-class farmers to church. The horse was additionally used for entertainment in the form of ridden short-track trotting races.2  In these races, the horse was traditionally ridden with just a small orange blanket on its back. During this period, the Friesian horse was very likely used in the breeding of the Orlov as well as American trotters.

On May 1, 1879, in Roordahuizum, the Friesch Paarden-Stamboek (the studbook of the Friesian horse) was established, which has registered Friesian horses ever since. Registration of the limited number of Friesian horses remaining proved somewhat of a stimulus to the breed, but the popularity of the heavier breeds, the so-called “Bovenlanders”, nonetheless continued to undermine the Friesian.  Supporters of the Bovenlanders were often unnecessarily harsh in their judgements of the Friesian horse that was said to “dance” too much in front of the plough and therefore wasted useful energy. There was some truth in what they said, but they failed to appreciate the history of the Friesian horse and the profound affection between master and horse that is so often seen with the Friesian breed.3

In the 17th century , the Marquis De Newcastle mentioned Friesian horses as being very qualified for dressage and high school riding.
At the end of the 19th and the start of the 20th century, a very difficult period ensued when the Friesian had to struggle to compete with the heavy breeds. The “dancing show horses” of the landed farmers were in fact less suited for heavy work. Farmers finally switched over to the heavier breeds or crossed the Friesian horse with these breeds, which proved almost fatal for the Friesian breed.  By the start of the 20th century, Friesian numbers were dwindling rapidly. In 1913, there were only three older studbook stallions available for breeding.4

Fortunately there were people in Friesland who wanted to save the native Friesian horse breed from extinction. They bought the remaining quality purebred colts and the Friesian was saved from disaster.4 Among others, the Royal Stables in Borculo and the De Oorsprong breeding farm, which had been established by the family Van Eysinga at Huis ter Heide in 1885, played a role in this.2

After 1913 and the Friesian’s competition with heavier horses, some of its luxuriance was compromised for more horsepower. The Friesian therefore became a bit smaller and heavier horse. As a result, a type of Friesian horse emerged that was different from what is more desirable today, which has the original long lines of its forefathers.4

In the 1960s the crisis resulting from farm mechanisation made the agricultural horse redundant. Most farmers lacked the money to keep a horse for pleasure only, which meant that the horse disappeared from the farm yards. In 1965, only some 500 mares were registered in the studbook.3 Fortunately there were now also great lovers of the breed who brought the horse to the attention of others. In 1967, the national riding association, De Oorsprong, began a crusade through the Dutch province of Friesland to promote the Friesian horse. From March 28 to April 1, a parade of lovers of the breed travelled with their Friesian horses from Huis ter Heide to Workum.2  The impact of the promotion campaign was evident in the rapid expansion of the breed in the two ensuing decades.

Since then, many people have discovered the fabulous characteristics of the Friesian breed and purebred Friesians are now seen and enjoyed around the world with the majority being in the Netherlands. As of 2007 more than 40,000 horses were registered by the Koninklijke Vereniging « Het Friesch Paarden-Stamboek » (KFPS) and some 7,000 breedings are now documented every year. 1* The result has been the establishment of “daughter” societies of KFPS outside the Netherlands. Most Dutch members are associated with breeding societies, which organize a large number of activities each year.  The Friesian has recently become one of Europe’s most respected performance horses. Because of continued steady growth in number as well as a tremendous surge in popularity, the Friesian’s survival is now virtually guaranteed.

A consistent breeding policy has produced the Friesian horse more familiar today, exhibiting the unique characteristics of the breed and continuing to bear close resemblance to its ancestors. There are three modern bloodlines: Tetman 205, Age 168, and Ritske 202. Each of these sires trace their blood to Paulus 121, who was born in 1913 and entered into the Studbook in 1916.  He in turn can be traced back three generations to the original 19th century Studbook foundation sire, Nemo 51, born in 1885.  Today all purebred Friesians trace back to these bloodlines.

Multipurpose Utility Breed:  Midway through the last century the Friesian horse was used mainly as a harness horse in farming operations. Because there is a close relation between an animal’s intended use and its exterior, Friesian horses that were bred for use in agriculture were more short-legged and compact than their ancestors, with forelegs a bit behind the vertical and a broad chest. With this broad chest, the horse was better able to throw itself “into the harness” and in so doing develop more pulling power. These exterior characteristics are less functional these days in the riding arena or in harness and driving horses. Nonetheless, the heavier and short-legged type is still much in evidence, partly because this type was bred for so many years and multiple generations are needed before it disappears from the breed.

These days Friesians are kept for purposes of recreation, breeding and sports, and often for some combination of these objectives. The Friesian is often seen in the dressage ring and in driving sports. Some of the more common uses are for ridden work under saddle and as a harness horse or driving horse.  For work under saddle and driving sports, a functional build is key.  The horse’s body must have an “uphill” slope. With this uphill build, the distribution of weight is brought more onto the hindquarters in motion, enabling the horse to carry more with its hindquarters. For an uphill build, a relatively long foreleg is important, as well as the stance of the foreleg. The stance of the foreleg is linked to the shoulder, whereby an angled and long shoulder provide the horse with space to extend its foreleg far out to the front. The harness horse often has a bit more vertical neckline than the riding and driving horse.

For an all purpose horse, the Friesian must move fluidly through its entire body, with powerful hindquarters that transmits movements forward, enabling the horse to “grow” in front, a desired trait for both riding under the saddle and for driving in front of the wagon.  For harness horses, a lot of knee action is desirable (but not this alone, as it must be combined with spaciousness of gaits and “carrying” hindquarters), while for riding horses and also driving horses, extravagant knee action is not always appreciated. For all purposes, a correct leg stance is a must.

      T

he Friesian horse has increasingly developed into a sports horse over the past decades, and in so doing is returning to its origins before the agricultural interlude. It is fast becoming the luxuriant aristocratic carriage horse it once was. Typical of these Black Pearls are the front, the majestic mane and feathering of the lower legs, the jet black color and the spacious, powerful elevated gaits. The harmonious build and the noble head, set on a lightly arched neck, complete the aristocratic and fiery appearance. Its amicable character is the key to a great utility breed. 2*  Today, thanks to its typical functional characteristics, the Friesian horse now competes with other breeds at the highest levels of equestrian sports. 4*

    Destrier – Wikipedia

The destrier is the best-known of the . It carried in battles, , and . It was described by contemporary sources as the Great Horse, due to its significance.

While highly prized by knights and , the destrier was not very common. Most knights and mounted men-at-arms rode other war horses, such as and . These three types of horse were often referred to generically as chargers.

    Etymology[]

The word is first attested in around 1330, as destrer. It was borrowed into Middle English from destrer, whose counterpart was destrier (from which the Modern English spelling derives). The word is also found in medieval (as destrier) and Italian (as destriere, destriero). These forms themselves derived from the equus dextarius, meaning « right-sided horse » (from dextra, « right hand », the same root as dexterous and dexterity). This may refer to it being led by the at the knight’s right side (or led by the right hand) or to the horse’s , (possibly leading with the right).

    Characteristics[]

The word destrier does not refer to a , but to a type of horse: the finest and strongest warhorse. These horses were usually , bred and raised from foalhood specifically for the needs of war. The destrier was also considered the most suited to the ; coursers seem to have been preferred for other forms of . They had powerful hindquarters, able to easily coil and spring to stop, spin, turn or sprint forward. They also had a short back and well-muscled loin, strong bone, and a well-arched neck. From medieval art, the head of the destrier appears to have had a straight or slightly profile, strong, wide jaw, and good width between the eyes.

The destrier was specifically for use in or ; for everyday riding, a knight would use a , and his baggage would be carried on a (or ), or possibly in wagons.

    Breeding and size[]

Much speculation has taken place about the nature of destriers and about the size they attained. They apparently were not enormous types. Recent research undertaken at the , using literary, pictorial and archeological sources, suggests war horses (including destriers) averaged from 14 to 15  (56 to 60 inches, 142 to 152 cm), and differed from a riding horse in their strength, musculature and training, rather than in their size. An analysis of medieval located in the indicates the equipment was originally worn by horses of 15 to 16 hands (60 to 64 inches, 152 to 163 cm), about the size and build of a modern or ordinary riding horse.

It is probable that the modern draft breed may in part descend from destriers, though it is probably taller and heavier than the average destrier. Other draft breeds such as the claim destrier ancestry, though proof is less certain.

in suggest a « Spanish » style of horse that today would be referred to as a , such as the , , or even a heavy but agile breed such as the . Modern estimates put the height of a destrier at no more than 16 hands (64 inches, 163 cm), but with a strong and heavy physique. Though the term « Great Horse » was used to describe the destrier, leading some historians to speculate that such animals were the forerunners of modern breeds, the historical record does not support the image of the destrier as a draft horse.

Modern attempts to reproduce the destrier type usually involve crossing an athletic riding horse with a light draft type. Outcomes of such attempts include such as the «  », a cross between the and the ; and the , a cross between the Andalusian and the .

    Value of quality war horses[]

A good destrier was expensive. Seventh-century gives a price of 12 as , or reparational payment, for a war horse, compared to 3 solidi for a sound mare or 1 solidus for a cow. In later centuries destriers became even more expensive: the average value of each of the horses in a company of 22 knights and squires in the county of Flanders in 1297 compares to the price of seven normal coursers. The price of these destriers varied between 20 and 300 livres parisis (parisian pounds), compared to 5 to 12 livres for a normal courser.

Masque de mouche cheval | Relief de terrain max | Plus de 70% d'UVprotection

    Description

The Field Relief Max is a horse fly mask that covers the ears, eyes and nose, with the nosepiece being removable and adjustable to suit your horse. The adjustable fastenings under the cheeks and behind the ears ensure the perfect fit and stop any nasty insects getting inside the mask.

There is soft sponge padding on the nose and brow areas as well as strategically placed darts to ensure that the masks sits well clear of the eyes, eyelashes and face. The mesh on this horse fly mask provides an effective barrier from midges, mosquitoes and flies as well as over 70% of the sun’s rays. The mesh is rigid for the central panel with a super soft net for the rest of the mask to provide further comfort.

Long lasting and easy to wash, the Max horse fly mask comes in a variety of sizes that not only suits the tiniest of ponies and largest of horses but small and large donkeys too! The Field Relief Max horse fly mask is often recommended by vets for use on horses with eye conditions who need to wear a face mask.
